The first City 7s season was during the spring of 2013; however, it originated from a social family kickabout that the girls teams had been running during the spring time for several years prior. We have kept the term “kickabout” as part of the City 7s logo to emphasize the informal and social nature of the original concept. So it is really the family mixed social competition that is the foundation of City 7s where the aim is for club members, their families and friends of all ages to enjoy playing soccer on the fantastic Jubilee pitch during the often very pleasant spring evenings.
The concept has grown to include Minroos, Juniors and Seniors in separate competitions with 24 teams and around 250 players participating in 2014. City 7s is viewed primarily as a service to members and associates who want to play social soccer, keep fit and hone their skills during the off-season. The competition is only promoted within the club although external teams are welcome to participate and we do attract a few each year. As such, the club maintains a low cost to participating teams with the aim to provide a way for the community to engage with the club rather than to make a profit.
Promotion of City 7s internally commences towards the end of the winter season during August with posters going up around the club rooms and an email to all club members. Team registrations are due at the end of August and payments are due at the end of September. The first round kicks off during the first week of term 4 and the competition runs for 10 weeks until mid-December. Rules of competition, terms and conditions, registration form and an FAQ can all be found on the club website under the competition tab. Fixtures, results and ladders can also be found on the club website. Winning teams from each competition are awarded medals and their team name is engraved on a perpetual shield.
FFV referees are rostered on for matches and the normal Laws of the Game apply with a few minor adjustments due to the half pitch 7-a-side format. A club disciplinary panel comprising the president, vice-president and director of football operations is available to deliberate on red card offences, which thankfully are rare at City 7s. To keep the cost low and reduce the burden on volunteers the teams are requested to assist with pitch setup at the beginning of the evening and pack up at the end. The canteen operates on both Wednesday and Friday nights for City 7s with the bar also open on Friday nights. Members are encouraged to come down on a fine evening and support the teams and enjoy one of Michelle’s awesome hamburgers!
